German Intelligence Suggests Putin Could Target NATO from 2026 Onwards

German intelligence services have prepared an analysis of the military threat posed by Russia, forecasting that as early as “from 2026,” it may launch an attack on the territory of NATO member countries.

This revelation, as reported by Business Insider, highlights growing concerns within European security circles regarding Russia’s intentions and military capabilities.

According to the analysis conducted by German intelligence agencies, Russia is gearing up for a significant conflict with the West, evidenced by the reorganisation of its military, troop movements, deployment of missiles in the western part of the country, and ramping up of arms production.

A confidential report suggests that Russia could potentially double its military strength over the next five years compared to the present day, particularly in conventional arms.

The report cited by Business Insider underscores the possibility that Russia could initiate an attack, at least on a portion of NATO territory, “from 2026,” possibly targeting Baltic or Finnish territories.

It’s worth noting that German authorities have yet to make such specific assertions publicly.

Concerns over Russia’s increasing military capabilities and continued confrontation have also resonated within NATO headquarters.

While acknowledging the rise in Russian military power, NATO officials do not necessarily foresee it leading to immediate conflict.

Quoting assessments from American intelligence agencies, Business Insider notes that in the medium term, there’s no perceived danger of a Russian attack on NATO.

These agencies estimate that it could take Russia another five to eight years to fully restore its military capabilities to pre-Ukraine invasion levels.

In recent weeks, several European NATO member states have been sounding alarms about the risk of Russian aggression in the near future.

For instance, in January, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius warned that the Alliance should prepare for a potential Russian attack within 5-8 years.

Against this backdrop, the Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces, is crafting a comprehensive new operational defence plan for the first time since the end of the Cold War.

This plan aims to incorporate lessons learned from Russia’s full-scale aggression against Ukraine.
