Belgium Expelled ‘Dozens of Russian Spies’ in Recent Months, Says PM Alexander De Croo

Belgium’s response to perceived threats from Russian intelligence operations has intensified in recent months, with Prime Minister Alexander De Croo disclosing the expulsion of numerous individuals identified as “so-called Russian diplomats” suspected of espionage activities.

In a candid interview with French-language channel RTL, De Croo emphasized Belgium’s proactive stance in addressing attempts by foreign entities to undermine its democratic institutions.

In addition to traditional espionage tactics, Belgium has also experienced cyber attacks and disinformation campaigns orchestrated by Russian operatives.

De Croo cited instances where Belgium’s adversarial stance towards Russia coincided with cyber assaults on national websites, underscoring the multifaceted nature of the security challenge.

De Croo’s remarks shed light on the case of Jürgen Conings, a former career soldier who posed a security threat during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021.

Belgium’s security services had reason to suspect organised disinformation campaigns during critical moments of the manhunt for Conings, highlighting the broader impact of Russian influence operations.

The revelation of extensive communication infrastructure at Russia’s embassy in Uccle, including 17 satellite dishes and various antennas, further underscores concerns regarding potential espionage activities.

A survey conducted in April 2023 revealed the proliferation of such equipment, raising alarms about its dual-use capabilities.

Addressing the financing of Belgian aid to Ukraine, De Croo outlined a pragmatic approach that leverages frozen Russian assets within Belgium.

By utilising taxes generated from these assets, Belgium can provide support to Ukraine without imposing additional burdens on its taxpayers.
