The European Union (EU) has condemned the recent “presidential elections” in Russia, denouncing them as having occurred under numerous restrictions, without the participation of genuine opposition, and conducted also in the occupied territories of Ukraine.

The statement was issued on behalf of the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.

He noted that the Russian “elections” took place “under very restrictive conditions,” with the Russian authorities continuing systematic repression against the opposition, disloyal civil society, and independent media.

Many opponents found themselves behind bars due to politically motivated court verdicts, and Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny died in custody shortly before the elections.

Borrell highlighted that under such circumstances, many potential candidates did not even attempt to run, and Russian voters did not have full access to information or genuine choice.

On behalf of the EU, he expressed regret at Russia’s decision not to invite observers from the OSCE, which contradicts its obligations.

Additionally, Borrell strongly condemned the opening of Russian polling stations in all occupied territories of Ukraine, which he deemed another violation of international law by Russia.

“The EU emphasizes that it does not recognize and will never recognize either the conduct of so-called ‘elections’ in these territories of Ukraine or their results. They are meaningless and cannot have any legal consequences.

The political leadership of the Russian Federation and those involved in their organization will face the consequences of such illegal actions,” Borrell stated.

In the statement, he also added that the EU will continue to support the important work of Russian civil society organizations, human rights defenders, and independent media.

The EU’s stance underscores its commitment to upholding democratic principles and the rule of law, as well as its condemnation of actions that undermine these values.

The criticism of Russia’s electoral process and its conduct in occupied Ukrainian territories reflects the EU’s dedication to defending the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, while advocating for democracy and respect for human rights.
