Putin’s Promise to Gagauzia: A Challenge to Moldova’s Integrity

Putin’s Promise to Gagauzia: A Challenge to Moldova’s Integrity

Recent developments indicate Russia’s interference in Moldova’s internal affairs, particularly concerning the autonomous region of Gagauzia.

The head of Gagauzia, Evgeniya Gutsul, during her unannounced visit to Russia, disclosed a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Moreover, Gutsul claimed that Putin pledged support to Gagauzia and its people in defending their legal rights, authorities, and positions on the international stage.

Gutsul officially assumed the presidency of Gagauzia in July 2023 amidst a controversial ceremony marred by numerous irregularities and the absence of her predecessor, Irina Vlah, and Moldova’s leadership.

Gutsul’s presence in Russia dates back to at least March 1st, during which she met with Valentina Matviyenko, the Chairwoman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation (the upper house of the parliament), seeking Moscow’s assistance.

The unfolding events raise concerns about Russia’s involvement in exacerbating tensions within Moldova, particularly in Gagauzia.

This interference threatens to undermine Moldova’s sovereignty and stability, as well as exacerbate existing divisions within the country.

The situation in Gagauzia is complex, with historical ties to Russia, alongside economic and cultural dependencies.

However, Moldova, as a sovereign state, seeks to maintain control over its internal affairs without external interference.

Any attempts by foreign powers to meddle in Moldova’s affairs are seen to risk further destabilising the region and complicating efforts towards peaceful resolution and democratic governance.

The international community, including the European Union, closely monitor the situation in Moldova and have condemned actions that undermine its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
