Russian Involvement in “Havana Syndrome” Afflicting US Diplomats Confirmed

In a recent development, journalists from various media outlets have uncovered evidence linking Russia to the so-called “Havana Syndrome,” which has afflicted over a hundred American diplomats with serious health issues.

This revelation stems from an investigation conducted by The Insider in collaboration with the German newspaper Der Spiegel and the American news program 60 Minutes on CBS.

Citing sources including testimonies from victims, Russian government documents, and data on movements and locations, journalists allege the involvement of Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, in the development and deployment of a special type of non-lethal acoustic weapon.

GRU

Andrey Averyanov, founder of Russian GRU Unit 29155.

Specifically, Russian GRU Unit 29155, specialising in military intelligence sabotage, has been named.

This device emits sound and radio frequencies that can be targeted at individuals.

According to the investigation, Unit 29155 of the GRU – founded by General Andrei Averyanov, now the powerful deputy director of the GRU – was experimenting with such weaponry.

Victims, their legal representatives, and a retired US Army colonel have also claimed that the American intelligence community concealed Russia’s involvement.

Just over two weeks ago, the US National Institutes of Health, which conducted an extensive study on the “Havana Syndrome,” failed to find a clinical explanation for it.

Victims have suffered from a range of mysterious health problems including hearing loss, insomnia, memory loss, balance disturbances, and inability to concentrate.

These symptoms, lasting for months, have been accompanied by complaints of ear pain and a sensation of intense pressure in the head.

The phenomenon was dubbed the “Havana Syndrome” after employees at the US embassy in Cuba began reporting this illness in 2016.

Subsequently, the US State Department in 2017 decided to significantly reduce the number of embassy staff in Cuba following a series of mysterious acoustic attacks on American diplomats.

However, according to the investigation, the first cases date back to 2014 when four Americans stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, reported symptoms. Later that same year, similar complaints came from CIA personnel in Ukraine.

More thanr 100 Americans, both domestically and abroad, have suffered from what has been officially classified as anomalous health incidents.

Olivia Troy, a former homeland security adviser to Vice President Mike Pence, recounted her experience of the attack in Washington, describing a piercing sensation on the side of her head.

Another victim, who worked in Tbilisi, described hearing a piercing sound and experiencing an acoustic attack in 2021.

The findings of the investigation contradict previous conclusions by American intelligence agencies, which attributed most cases to stress, previously undiagnosed medical conditions, or environmental factors.

However, allegations of Russian involvement in “acoustic attacks” on US diplomats in Cuba are not new.

Scientist Alan Frey, whose name is associated with the phenomenon of the microwave auditory effect caused by microwave radiation, suggested that microwave attacks on US diplomats in Cuba were orchestrated with Russia’s involvement.

According to Frey, Moscow had an interest in undermining Cuban-American relations, which had been improving recently.
